Return on Investment: Treatments and prevention programs that will improve Hoosiers' health and cut health care costs
The Indiana University School of Medicine–Evansville, with the leadership of assistant dean Rex Stith, is creating a Center for Nutrition and Immunity, where scientists will explore key nutritional building blocks necessary to support infants' immune-system development and other vital mechanisms of biological development. This research will help create new products that will provide infants with the best possible start in life.
A major outcome of the Indiana Life Sciences Initiative will be healthier Hoosiers. Because IU is home to the second largest medical school in the nation, people from all over the United States and the world travel to Indiana to seek innovative treatments from some of the world's best doctors. Funding from the Indiana Life Sciences Initiative will provide even more opportunities to produce tomorrow's medicine, improve Hoosiers' health, and reduce the state's health care costs.
Here are some health programs and benefits that Hoosiers can expect to see:
Prevention and treatment programs to tackle the health problems that affect Hoosiers most, including cancer, obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
Better care, new drugs, and enough Indiana doctors to treat the illnesses that aging brings, such as cancer, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's disease.
Greater access to effective weight loss, exercise, nutrition, and smoking cessation programs throughout Indiana communities.
Initiatives that will help cut spending on health care in the state. This will make Indiana a more attractive home for businesses.
